The report by law firm Irwin Mitchell and the Centre for Economics and Business Research revealed Huddersfield’s sports-related activity generated an additional £8m between the years of 2019 and 2020, seeing an increase from £52.7m to £60.7m. Again, this comes despite the difficulties experienced during Covid and occurred alongside an increase in employment in the sector, leaping by over a third from 1,575 to 2,150.
The top eight growing sports economies in 2020 were revealed to be located in Yorkshire and the Humber, collectively adding £60.1m to the economy of the UK’s sports sector. These were the only locations in the report to see economic growth in the sector during the Covid pandemic.
