The Telegraph – RMT boss Mick Lynch threatens ‘coordinated action’ in every UK town

Trade unions need to “coordinate industrial action across every town and city in Britain”, the head of the RMT union has said.

“If the government doesn’t change direction, I believe more strike action is inevitable. We as trade unions need to synchronise,” Mick Lynch told Sky News.

“If we need to have industrial action, we need to coordinate industrial action in every town and city,” he said, arguing that the British worker needs a pay rise.

His call to action comes as more than 50,000 members of the RMT rail union are set to walk out on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday this week.

RMT members on the London Underground are staging a 24-hour Tube train stoppage on Tuesday.

Business chiefs have warned that continued strike actions would cause “incredible” damage to the UK in both the short-term and long-term as firms brace themselves for heavy disruption.

Economists at the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) have warned that the three strikes across Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday will have a fallout worth at least £91 million to the UK economy.

Industry leaders have warned that the costs could be even more as travellers and commuters decide to stay at home.

Richard Burge, chief executive of the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry, warned that the capital “cannot afford a summer of chaos on the railways and tube lines”.
