Research found that the economy will be increasingly dependent on the middle aged as the 24million over-50s in the UK become an increasingly important demographic of entrepreneurs.
According to some reports the UK economy currently faces a productivity crisis meaning this reliance on the older generations could cause concerns among policymakers looking to incentivise younger business leaders to grow their ventures.
This combines with the fact that an increasing number of 50-64 year olds choose not to retire and stay in the labour market. The amount of the older generation staying in work has increased from 65 per cent in 2012 to 71 per cent in 2016.
The results put forward by CEBR show that the number of employed 50-64 year-olds will surpass 9million before the end of 2018 and by 2021 there will be 10million 50-64 year olds in work.
