20 Years On:reviewing our forecasts

Cebr celebrates its 20th anniversary by publishing a selection of past forecasts

Cebr, the leading economics consultancy celebrates its 20th anniversary on 14 January 2013. To celebrate this, we have taken the risk of publishing a selection of our past forecasts.
They range from a prediction that men would do more washing up to an early understanding of the growth of the Chinese economy and an accurate prediction of its impact on energy, minerals and food prices long before any other commentator suspected this. This has helped drive our understanding of disposable income trends in the West and hence the sluggish growth in the UK economy.
We have been consistently one of the best UK forecasters for GDP and for house prices. Like anyone who makes forecasts we do make mistakes…..although we have not been sufficiently masochistic to print them here! But our mistakes are useful – we use them to check up on our techniques and revise them if we conclude we are making systematic mistakes. This ‘error correction process’ is one of the reasons why our forecasting continues to improve and one of the reasons why we do better than official forecasters.
