Here is an excerpt from Danae’s latest analysis of China’s GDP from Cebr’s The Prospect Service (TPS):

“Chinese stimulus measures feed through to real economy but source of growth raises concerns over sustainability

China’s economy grew by 6.7% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2016, according to data released today by the National Bureau of Statistics of China. While this is a slowdown from last quarter’s performance of 6.8%, it still lies at the upper end of policymakers’ target range of 6.5-7% growth for 2016.

Beneath the headline news, today’s release revealed that the slowdown was much more pronounced in the services sector of the economy, whose growth slowed from 8.2% to 7.6% this quarter. The industry and construction sectors also saw milder slowdowns in activity. The weakening of the services sector on a year-on-year basis is likely due to the failure of the financial services sector to keep up the exceptionally strong growth seen in the first quarter of last year. The National Bureau of Statistics will be releasing further data that will confirm or reject this hypothesis in the coming days. Still, while it is too early to know what exactly within services is responsible for the slowdown, the fact that we are seeing such a pronounced slowdown in the services sector does not bode well for China’s ambition to achieve the transition to a service-oriented economy…”
