Douglas McWilliams was appointed Professor of Commerce at Gresham College in August 2012.
His first three professorial lectures ‘The greatest ever world economic event’, ‘Is the growth in the emerging economies additional or are we growing more slowly’ and ‘A New Theory of Economic Growth’ have been given to large audiences and attracted favourable media comment.
This fourth lecture looked at the economic policies that will best boost economic growth in the West in the face of competitive pressure from the emerging Eastern economies and in the face of primary product price rises. The lecture applied the insights from the third lecture ‘A new theory of economic growth’ to go beyond the issues that are normally considered. It looked, for example, at how the high cost of housing in the UK has a greater negative impact on economic growth than might appear at first sight. It covered issues such as tax policy, competition policy and regulatory policy.
