Cebr is delighted to present the results of research commissioned by the Institute of Physics (IOP) to analyse the role of physics in the economy, with a particular focus on the contribution of the sector in terms of employment, economic growth and productivity.

In line with the previous research carried out by Cebr, this updated and extended piece of research provides a thorough and comprehensive examination of the role of the physics-based industries to the economy in the UK and Ireland. Cebr produced a range of statistics demonstrating different aspects of the value brought by the physics-based industries, as well as a detailed disaggregation of the physics-based businesses themselves, to bring additional granularity to the findings.

In the reports we focused on:

  • The direct and aggregate contribution of the physics-based industries (PBIs) to the UK economy, analysing the main economic metrics (turnover, GVA, employment, compensation of employees, productivity)
  • The business demography of the PBIs
  • The contribution of the national and regional economies
  • The value of R&D investment in the PBIs
  • Impact of the UK’s and Ireland’s PBIs relative to international comparators
  • PBIs within the political and policy landscape
